You can check here and simply find your location to determine whether your property is in a smoke control area or not. This is due to the clean air act that was enforced to stop people from burning anything other than smokeless fuel in an appliance.

In recent years stove manufacturers have created stoves that will burn wood cleanly without harmful emissions. These have been tested and certified as Smoke Exempt. Please see the list below for stoves that can burn wood legally in smoke control areas. There are more stoves available but this is a list of the ones we would consider true contenders due to their quality and availability in the UK. Many of the other stoves listed on the DEFRA website are not available in the UK and warranty backup becomes a real issue when having to source appliances through 'middle men'.
